Chocolate & Peppermint

As I mentioned before Peppermint Essential Oil seems to be the most versatile oil included in the Starter Kit. Being that it is part of the Vitality line, I of course had to try it in some sort of snack. My first attempt at something chocolatey peppermint flavored didn’t go as expected!

This should be a story about a yummy treat; instead it’s a story about me learning from experience. I wanted some hot chocolate and thought it was a perfect opportunity to try Peppermint Essential Oil in a new way. I put a single drop of Peppermint Vitality into a 12oz mug of hot chocolate. As I lifted the cup to my mouth I realized one drop was WAY too much for me. But, I can tell you that the next time I feel stuffed up, I will absolutely be filling a cup of hot water and adding a drop of peppermint vitality to hold near my face. Wow does that clear you out! Unfortunately, I had to dump the hot chocolate. Now I know to dip a toothpick in the oil then into the drink, gradually adding a little bit of peppermint at a time.

Now for an actual yummy treat with Peppermint Essential Oil. I went with brownies. My 8 year old has to do a Gluten Free and Casein Free Diet, with many other restrictions. So having the Vitality Oils really helps give us more variety. GFCF brownies with a hint of peppermint, YUM! We just followed the directions on the box and added a drop. I recommend first putting your drop of oil on to a spoon and then into your mix. Essential Oils are so potent. This way, if an extra drop or two slips out you can just push the amount you want into the food with a toothpick, instead of giving your food an overpowering flavor.

I will definitely be baking with Peppermint Vitality more often!

Peppermint Vitality: Repel & Attract

In my opinion the most versatile Essential Oil in the Premium Starter Kit is Peppermint Vitality. At first I only used it in the diffuser, combining it with other oils.
Then I branched out a little and put a drop in my lemon water.
I did this since Peppermint Oil helps promote a healthy digestive system,
plus it tastes so good and really wakes you up!

Here are two complete opposite ways I have used it.

Bug Repellant:
When the weather started getting a little warmer and the rain called the bugs out of hiding, all the ants took cover in my house.
Tons of them found their way into my bathroom.
I found a massive pile of them on a drop of Children’s toothpaste that wasn’t cleaned off the sink. Trails of ants going to and from a fruity blue glop.
(UMMM are my kids brushing their teeth with sugar? Ugh, that is a whole other topic for another day).
Anyway, the ants had to go. My 2 year old wants to chase them down and pick them up so, ant poison really is not a go to option for me.

I filled a spray bottle with water and added a few drop of peppermint oil, sprayed them down, watched them freak out, wiped them up and flushed some down the drain.
I really enjoyed watching them run in the opposite direction of wherever I sprayed the peppermint water. I realized anyone who might see me doing this would think I am psychotic. I was having way too much fun.
So I stopped torturing them and finished cleaning up.
I decided to keep a peppermint water spray bottle in the bathroom,
reapplying the mixture around the baseboards and sink every few days.
It is working to keep the masses from coming back and
I don’t have to worry about rushing a toddler to the ER for playing with poison.
I hear this works to repel other pests as well, such as spiders and mice!

BONUS: I now know that SOMETIMES my 8-year-old listens to me. He is learning about oils. He asked me if I had any more Peppermint Essential Oil.
When I asked him why he replied,
“I want to put some in my water gun so I can shoot ants!”

The joys of being a Boy Mom 🙂

The Opposite of Repellant:
It’s been a busy few weeks in our home. Mike was running in our local election, (congratulations to him for winning)! He really had to get out and talk to people as much as possible. He gets home from work after 7pm most nights, that doesn’t leave him much time. One night he got home and said, “Do you have something for my breath? I need to go talk to people.” I’m pretty sure he meant a breath mint or gum, but I had a better idea. Peppermint Oil! I had him put one drop on his finger and rub it around his teeth. Perfect. He could confidently go talk to people with out the annoying smacking of gum or chunks of a mint stuck in his teeth!

Stay tuned for a few more ways I’ve been using Peppermint Vitality.

Again, Young Living Peppermint Vitality is safe to ingest. Other brands of Peppermint oil may not be, please make sure you know what is in your oil before putting it to your mouth.

Cooking with Lemon Vitality

lemon (1)

After a few days of watching me drop Lemon Vitality into my water in the morning, Mike finally said it, “Can’t you just buy a bag of lemons to squeeze into your water? It’s the same thing and much cheaper.”

The answer is no.
It’s not the same thing at all. Squeezing a lemon gives you juice, this is oil.
Lemon Essential Oil does not contain citric acid while Lemon Juice squeezed from the pulp does. The citric acid makes it difficult for sensitive stomachs to handle.
Lemon Essential Oil is extracted from the rind/peel.
How many times have you heard people say the outer peel is the most nutrient packed part?

Lemon Essential Oil contains significantly more Limonene than Lemon Juice.
Limonene is what makes lemons so powerful. It aids in digestion, and supports the respiratory and immune systems.
The Ancient Egyptians use Lemon Essential oil to rid their bodies of toxins.

Now lets talk price.
A 3lb bag of lemons at a bulk warehouse store costs a little under $5 and gives you an average of 15 lemons. A 15mL bottle of Young Living Essential Oil takes 75 lemons to make and gives you an average of 250 drops. Each use only takes 1-2 drops.
That bottle costs $11.25 and wont go bad after time like unused lemons.
Nope, lemons are not cheaper than Lemon Essential Oil and the oil can be used for anything the lemon can, and then some! Plus it’s so much more convenient with the same great taste.

I am really bad about drinking water and I have tried so many times to do the lemon water in the morning thing. I last 4 days. After that I don’t want to cut the lemon and avoid the seeds. I give up.
Grab a glass, add some water, drop of lemon, stir, drink- That, I can handle every day.

Here are some other easy ways I consume Lemon Vitality Essential Oil through out the day.
Try out these recipes and tweak them to your liking.
Let me know what you come up with!

Diffusing Lemon

You know those mornings when you find yourself making every excuse to not get out of bed? I had one the other day. My eyes were burning, my body was drained, I was up too late taking care of babies, I didn’t have anywhere I needed to be and the kids weren’t awake yet, I was just feeling BLAH.

Lemon Essential oil in the diffuser was my weapon against the blahs and laziness!

With my eyes closed I fought off all excuses by telling myself,
“Go diffuse some lemon!”
Within minutes the fresh scent took my mood from mopey and lazy to happy and productive. How can that be?
The limbic system is the emotional center of the brain and it is linked to scents!
It only takes 22 seconds for oil to reach the brain when it’s inhaled and the lemon aroma is so uplifting!

Lemon is not only a great mood enhancer and good way to get you moving.
Lemon in the diffuser is an all around win!

The house smells so clean when lemon is diffused. That’s because the lemon is ACTUALLY cleaning the air. Sure, you can buy lemon scented air freshener if your concern is the smell. The scent might last for an hour or two, but you’ll also be inhaling whatever else comes out of those aerosol cans. Diffusing Essential Oil will give lasting results of freshness in the air. I love the way Valerie Ann Worwood says it in her book, The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy,

“Essential oils make much more sense as air fresheners than commercial products, as they cleanse the air by altering the structure of the molecules creating the smells, rather than masking the unwanted smells.”

Moral of this story is, if you need a pick me up, or some motivation to get moving, I recommend diffusing lemon essential oil.

If you want to safely freshen the air in your home, choose to diffuse lemon essential oil over the lemon scented spray can.

Lemon is my MOST USED oil from the Young Living Premium Starter Kit. Diffusing it is just one of many ways I am obsessing over it.
More lemon stories are coming your way!

I am so happy to be making the switch to oils.
It just makes scents. I mean sense.
(Sorry I couldn’t NOT do that).

Essential Oil use dates back to ancient civilizations. They were used in Ancient Mesopotamia,  Egypt, India, Greece and Rome. Essential oils were considered medicines of the earth. Many of the perfumes and products we use today are made to imitate the fragrances and cleansing properties that are naturally found in essential oils.

It is believed that Essential Oils help promote a healthy lifestyle.
They are stimulating to the circulatory system and digestive system.
In other words, essential oils work to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. The increase in blood flow that can be caused by Essential Oils leads to the immune system working more efficiently.
The fresh aroma given off by essential oils can also improve mood and emotion.

There are around 300 different essential oils in existence and each one has several uses. You only need 10-20 to have an effective kit….but lets be real, who doesn’t want all of them?!

The Young Living Premium Starter Kit comes with eleven 5mL bottles of Essential Oils (listed below).  I have tried them all.
I am going to begin this blog by addressing how I have been using each of the oils included in the starter kit.

This week the spotlight is on my MOST USED: LEMON Vitality.

The Vitality line is edible, yum!! I have been cooking with it, cleaning with it, diffusing it and absolutely loving it. A tiny bit goes a long way in recipes. My sink looks great. It smells refreshing and is totally deodorizing that diaper filled garbage that should have been taken out last night.
